A very simple, cheap and effective vertical garden Read more →

A Brisbane couple had a renovated a warehouse that they share with a 2 year old & 2 dogs. The open plan area incorporating a kitchen, lounge, dining & main entrance was dominated by a 12m white, double height wall that runs the length of the room.

As the wall was shared with the warehouse next door, it was hard to supply water and power to the site. The solution was to install a minimalist vertical garden.

The solution was simple. Mount 9 hidden-fixing floating shelves 23cm x 23cm in white. Each shelf has 1 square white pot with Pothos drapping between the pots.

The shelves are in 2 lines with a staggered, checker board layout. With the “white on white” approach, the single species selection of Pothos really stands out.

The clients are happy to maintain the hand watering regime & there is enough available natural light for the Pothos to thrive.

This wall was installed by Pete Shields.

Adelaide Zoo’s new Giant Panda enclosure completed in late 2009 included the installation of an indoor and outdoor green wall by Fytogreen. The zoo is now home to Wang Wang and Funi, two Giant Pandas, recently sent from the People’s Republic of China as part of an exchange program, whereby several zoos around the world have been selected to breed panda pairs.

Adelaide Zoo is home to over 1,800 animals and almost 300 species of exotic and native mammals, birds, reptiles and fish exhibited in 8 hectares of magnificent botanic surroundings.

Mainly native grasses were used in the 97sqm outdoor green wall and include 20-25 different species and over 4,600 plants.

The external green wall plant palette reflects a more dryland plant selection in line with the landscape of the forecourt located adjacent to the wall. Hardy native plants have been used including Enchylaena tomentosa or “Ruby Saltbush” which is native to the Adelaide plains. The patterning of the plants in the wall alludes to the proximity of first creek.

Species chosen for the external wall include:

Dianella caerulea ‘Little Jess’ (native) “Dianella Little Jess”

Dianella tasmanica ‘Tas Red’ (native) “Dianella Tas Red”

Enchylaena tomentosa (endemic) “Ruby Saltbush”

Lomandra confertifolia ssp. rubiginosa ‘Seascape’ (native) “Lomandra Seascape”

The plants were pre-grown off site for 20 weeks prior to installation. The green wall is automated with sensors that alerts maintenance crew for any system failure.

Spot fertiliser method was used extensively as a nutrient source. Slow release fertiliser is supplied behind the plants as well as fertigating the system through the whole wall.

The planting media is a melamine formaldehyde resin that is blown into a hard biodegradable foam slabs, wrapped and placed in frames for vertical gardens

Here you can see moss growing and also a hole caused by a removed plant. The brown irrigation lines run above each cell.

The vertical garden is irrigated for about 10 minutes per day. As you can see below the water is not recycled as only a small amount is leaked into the garden bed below.

The plant palette for the internal green wall is more lush in comparison to the external green wall. The intent was to use as many native plants as possible but due to availability from the nursery & suitability for the internal location this was not possible for the whole plant palette.

The 110 sqm indoor green wall has the following plant species:

Adiantum sp. (native) “Spleenwort”

Asplenium oblongifolium “Shining Spleenwort”

Blechnum nudum (native) “Fishbone Waterfern”

Crytomium sp. “Holly Fern”

Davallia pyxidata (native) “Hare’s?Foot Fern”

Dichondra repens ‘Emerald Falls’ (native) “Kidney Weed”

Doodia aspera (native) “Prickly Rasp Fern”

Liriope ‘Evergreen Giant’ “Lilyturf”

Peperomia sp. “Ripple Plant”

Polypodium ‘Blue Star’ “Rock Polypody”

Pteris albo?liniata “Brake Fern”

Pteris umbrosa (native) “Jungle Brake”

Selaginella sp. “Spikemoss”

Soleirolia soleirolii “Baby Tears”

Streptocarpus caulescens “Nodding Violet”

Tradescantia ‘Spiderwort’ “Spiderwort”

Viola hederacea (native) “Native Violet”

There was a long growing?on time for the plants to create 100% plant coverage at the time of installation. The modules were transported from Victoria and installed on site along with the irrigation system.

On a sunny afternoon in September 2010, scaffolding and construction obscured the front of Cava Tapas and Wine Bar, a small restaurant with an outdoor patio tucked away on Commercial Alley in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. But within a few hours, the plain brick facade was transformed into a vertical garden, the first such garden in the area: The Coastal Home- Charles C Hugo Landscape Design Vertical Garden at Cava.

More than half a dozen species of predominantly native perennials fill the 160 square feet of vertical green space, a design planned and executed by Charles Hugo and Maya Travaglia of Charles C Hugo Landscape Design Lynn Felici-Gallant, former editor of Tastes sister publication Coastal Home magazine, spearheaded the project, the result of eight months of planning, fundraising, and organizing of volunteers.

Indeed, the project utilized the services of over a dozen sponsors and volunteers, including donations by film producer Chase Bailey and Seacoast businessmen William Matos and John Forma. Four New Hampshire nurseries Van Berkum Nursery, Stonepost Nursery Pleasant View Gardens/Proven Winners and Rolling Green Nursery plants and soil, Rainscape Lawn Sprinkler Systems supplied irrigation, and GroWalls donated the vertical wall system at a not-for-profit rate. Other generous donors included Rockingham Electric, FX Luminaire, electrician Sid Madore of Raymond, N.H. and Caswell Mechanical.

Felici-Gallant, who is also a garden and container designer and current marketing manager for Pleasant View Gardens, joined forces with Hugo and Travaglia to determine the ideal site for the garden.

Cava has a European feel to it, given the courtyard, outdoor seating, and location in Commercial Alley. Since vertical gardens originated in Paris, Cava felt like the appropriate spot. Because the garden would feature area woodland perennials, it also needed a wall with a lot of shade, and the Cava facade was ideal.

One of the reasons this vertical garden is unique, even on a national scale, is that it uses predominantly native New England plants, says Felici-Gallant. “To our knowledge, there isnt another native-plants vertical garden in the country.”

“When they approached us and offered to do the garden, it was a no-brainer to say yes, says John Akar, co-owner of Cava. Its a beautiful, beautiful piece of work. Chef and co-owner Gregg Sessler agrees. Its absolutely gorgeous, he says. It adds amazing atmosphere to the patio. Its pretty incredible, and were ecstatic and honored that its there.”

Hugo and Travaglia were both eager to be involved in this first-of-its-kind project. We were very excited to do something new, something cutting edge for the Seacoast, Travaglia enthuses. And something for the community too, Hugo adds. Its public art, really. We tried to choose plants that would look good, complement each other, and create an interesting design. The perennial plants are evergreen or semi-evergreen, so the wall will transform with the seasons.

Mexican Vertical Garden Firm, Biozotea have recently installed a vertical garden involving 3,000 plants.

In this project the support structure was built using aluminum, which was very practical solution for its lightness and speed. The photo below shows the plastic modules with the plants growing in a nursery.

An ingenious part of the installation is that 80% of water used for irrigation comes from the effect of condensation of A / C, which stores and drip irrigation is used in the wall. Below is a photo of the transportation to site.

Plants installed with the drip irrigation being laid in between modules

Does quite look like a vertical garden on the first day.

After 10 weeks the wall looks amazing

On Nafas Art Magazine I found an exhibition in Berlin in 2008 by Mona Hatoum that used 770 jute sacks filled with seeds to create a simple vertical garden.

The exhibition, strangely called “The Hanging Garden” is described below.

“Mona Hatoum is showing a constantly changing installational sculpture at the gallery of Berlin’s DAAD artists program. Hatoum had 770 jute sacks stacked up to head level; the resulting pile is 10 meters long and resembles the sandbag barricades used in battle as shelter from enemy gunfire”

“But in this case the sacks are filled with seeds that continue sprouting throughout the duration of the exhibition. The artist thereby seems to take up a conceptual thread from her early works, which were located in the area of performance: temporary works in public space.”

Patrick Poiraud from Green over Grey Designers emailed in some photos of a vertical garden they have just completed at Semiahmoo Public Library in Canada. According to Patrick, it is “the largest and most biologically diverse outdoor green wall in North America”. It is located in Surrey, Canada, covering the Semiahmoo Public Library and RCMP Facility.

The 3,000 square feet design incorporates over 10,000 individual plants representing more than 120 unique species. It includes ground covers, large perennials, shrubs and small trees. The large diversity of plant species chosen creates a balanced ecosystem that is an urban oasis for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

The living wall helps to insulate the building, purify the air and transforms the grey concrete into hundreds of shades of green. The initial inspiration for this garden came from the artwork of the Coast Salish (including Semiahmoo) First Nations People.

We look forward to seeing the living wall in a years time when it has fully developed.

Phyto Universe is an upmarket hair and beauty salon in Manhattan. A major feature of the building is a 2,850 square foot living wall installed by Laurent Corradi.

The living wall was made of an aluminiun frame with PVC sheets covered in felt on each side.

The vertical garden design includes 9,000 plants including philodendron, ponytail, hibiscus, ferns, anthurium, ficus and begonia. Irrigation of the plants is for one minute 3 times daily.

Phyto Universe doesn’t offer cuts or color, instead the focus is on scalp and hair. Therapies to remedy dandruff, dry strands, thinning manes and overly kinky locks cost $150 to $350. The price is probably worth it to see a green wall this good.

What to do with an old advertising banner? Turn it into a vertical garden Read more →

WallGreen is an entry by Erika Jacobs Lord in the RE:FRAME competition. Re:Frame asks designers to come up with new ways to recycle printed PVC advertising banners. They want to know what can be designed from old scaffolding sheets apart from bags? WallGreen is a hanging vertical garden made from recycled PVC vinyl that improves indoor air quality.

Any PVC banner with a minimum size of 600 mm high and 400 mm wide can be fabricated into a working product.

Measurements for this example: 2000 x 1000 x ca 100 mm.Original banner was 2000 x 2000 mm.
Growing pockets are sewn to 160 mm deep.

Pockets are folded and sewn with standard thread along side seams and attached to the back layer at 300mm intervals.
Caulking at the side seams creates a watertight seal.

Growing medium is expanded clay and potting mix.

Plants chosen were Epiprenum aurem (Golden Pothos), Hedera Helix “Wonder” (English Ivy), Adiantum fragrans (Maidenhair Fern), Belchnum gibbem (“Silver Lady” Fern)
