Wall Mounted Personal Ecosystem
June 22nd, 2010 | Posted by in LusheIt is always interesting checking out what new concepts are being developed by young industrial designers. The Electrolux Design Lab Competition invited global undergraduate and graduate industrial design students to create home appliances that consider shrinking domestic spaces.
From a field of 1,300, the top 25 concepts were chosen from designers based in 17 countries across the world. One of the semi-finalists produced a living wall system.

GAIA, Ankit Kumar, India – Wall Mounted Air Purification
The GAIA Root concept is a self sustaining, wall mounted ‘personal ecosystem’ that creates energy from a living wall of plants providing air circulation, air purification and temperature control abilities. Envisaged as a personal touch of green, the wall units are modular so can be fitted in to homes and apartments of different sizes as required to provide individualised clean air whilst taking a minimum of space.
Electrolux Design Lab
Electrolux Design Lab is an annual global design competition held by Electrolux. It is designed to support talented design students in their future careers as well as provide Electrolux with smart insight into future product design possibilities
The brief was:
Your ideas will shape how people prepare and store food, wash clothes, and do dishes in the homes of 2050 when 74%* of the world’s population are predicted to live in an urban environment. Growing populations living in concentrated areas dictate a need for greater space efficiency. This year, special consideration will be given to designers that submit a design within the context of a range or suite of solutions/appliances. Your design ideas should address key consumer requirements; being green, adaptive to time and space, and allowing for individualization.
