I found a great little comment thread on vertical gardens at Gardeners Index. One of posts that took my eye was great DIY vertical garden made out of garbage bags.

From the photos the plants appear to be growing quite well.

There is no information on the media or irrigation used.

Certainly another great way to cover up a chain link fence.
