Plastiki: The vertical garden on a boat
March 22nd, 2010 | Posted by in LushePlastiki is a boat that David de Rothschild and a six-man crew are sailing from San Francisco to Sydney, Australia. The goal is to sail 12,000 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean in a boat made entirely out of plastic bottles and recycled waste products.
De Rothschild is on a mission of high-tech consciousness-raising, a quest to call attention to ocean pollution and nudge individuals and corporations into changing their use of plastic and other materials.
What caught my eye was the hydroponic vertical garden designed by Inka that sits on the rear mast. It provides fresh vegetables for the crew.

The Plastiki is the name of the sailing vessel which David de Rothschild will, with a six-man crew, sail across the Pacific Ocean starting in San Francisco, California in March 2010, ending his journey in Sydney, Australia after a planned visit of several sites of ecological importance or which are susceptible to environmental issues caused by global warming, for instance the current sea level rise, ocean acidification and marine pollutionYou can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0 You can leave a response, or trackback.

Not everything with green leaves in the air is a vertical garden……………….
I agree, but in this occassion it is grown in a vertical plane rather than a horizontal plane using the Inka stretch hydroponic vertical garden.
Yuk! Don’t like it! It looks a very sad installation to me…
i think its great a concept – there would be a lot more aussies today if only Captain Cook had one of these – all that Vit C would have warn away disease – its good to see how the grow your own movement is extended beyond the backyard and architecture – keep it coming Lushe – great post
That is a really great idea and concept. What I find interesting is that the garden itself is highly sustainable. The crew must really enjoy these vegetables.
This vertical hydroponic garden was created to use very little water and to be able to sustain ocean conditions. The garden has a built in rain catchment system to minimalism fresh water use from the crews supplies. Each person on board his allocated 3 litters of fresh water per day. This is very similar to the water consumption of over 2 billion people living on land. So far the crew has reported great pleasure in eating fresh veggies at sea.
